JUNIOR FIRST AID
A course for primary school students
This weekly program is designed to introduce year 5 or 6 students to the basic principles of first aid, whilst also exploring the personal values and character attributes that are important for first aiders.

Each weekly session includes a basic skills workshop combined with a group discussion focussed on the values or attributes required for first aiders. The overall program contains 8 to 10 weekly sessions and is designed to be run over one school term.

We use a narrative based approach during the group discussion sessions to introduce prominent people or organsations who have made a significant contribution to first aid or healthcare. The discussion highlights the personal values and the significance of thier contribution.
Following on from the discussion, the students participate in a hands-on skills workshop. The activities in the workshop are focussed on skills that relate to the person or organisation.
For example the group discussion talks about how the CSL Seqirus organisation uses scientific collarobration to make antivenom for snakebite in Australia; the skills workshop covers the first aid skills required for a snake bite.
Another example covers the story of Simpson and his donkey at Gallipoli during World War 1 and how his initiative and courage helped to save lives at Anzac cove. The skills session covers the basics of using a bandage to control bleeding.
